Exeter College JCR has passed a motion calling for the removal of a college internet filter that blocks ‘pornographic’ websites.
The motion pointed out that there were ways of circumventing the filter, which were “inconvenient and unnecessary”.
It furthermore noted that the filter blocked websites which were “needed by students for genuine research purposes”, which included sites mentioning ‘The Origins of Sex’, a history book written by a tutor and fellow at Exeter.
Fourth year maths and philosophy student and ex-JCR president Katy Moe proposed the motion, in which she noted: “There is nothing wrong with viewing pornography.” Moe explained that the “provocative wording” was “deliberate”. She said, “I'd anticipated that the JCR would move to change the wording to rule out illegal and exploitative pornography which, of course, is not okay.”
However, she asserted, “Exonians are adults who are able to make their own ethical judgements. Exeter College is not in loco parentis. ”Describing the debate, she remarked, “Opposition to the motion was not very vocal. One person mentioned the risk of computer viruses. It was countered that this is not the reason the IT staff give for having the filter in place.”

Horner, better known by his stripper name Billy the Kid, attended UB class Sexual Communication (COM 492) last Thursday as a guest speaker. Lance Rintamaki, a professor in the department of communication, invited the stripper to lecture to his class for the second year in a row.
The room was filled over capacity. Even students who weren’t enrolled in the class wanted to hear what the stripper had to say.
Acclaimed Australian Film Director John Duigan has just launched his latest project “Careless Love”. The film follows the story of a Vietnamese Australian university student who has become a sex worker to help her parents and also help fund her studies.
The film comes at a time when sex workers are in the news with one SA Judge resigning over his involvement with a sex worker and Federal Politician being accused of frequenting brothels.
State politicians are also calling for what they say is a long overdue reform of the laws relating to sex work in South Australia.

A new study by a final year medical student, published in the British Medical Journal, said one in ten students knew a peer who had become a sex worker.
In 2002 just one in 25 were aware of a peer in the sex industry, while in 2006 it was one in 15.
The report said the rising proportion of doctors turning to prostitution coincided with a rise in annual tuition fees to £9,000 and possible eventual debts of up to £70,000.
In addition, more than a quarter of students said they knew of a fellow trainee who had earned cash by pole dancing, lap dancing or stripping.

With an event titled "What They Didn't Teach You in Sex Ed," Undergraduates for a Better Yale College kicked off True Love Week as an alternative to sexual objectification and the hook-up lifestyle prevalent in Sex Week, which boasts about 50 workshops on topics like contraception, sexual harassment, pornography, and online dating.
Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council says there is a misconception that sensual pleasures lead to happiness.
"The facts show otherwise, and I think that's the message that True Love Week is trying to spread -- that if you seek true happiness in long-term relationships, then mere sexual self-indulgence is not the way to achieve it," he offers.
